Paper Waste

Research says, an employee uses 10,000 sheets of paper every year in different forms including paper printouts, notepads, diaries, invoices, cardboards, parcels, paper cups, plates and transaction receipts. We just ran out of breath while counting. Shocking? One more shock? Every year an employee contributes to the cut down of 1 innocent tree. That’s more than an employee plants in a year. Each one of us is indirectly responsible for reducing the Oxygen for 3 people to breathe by throwing that paper in the dustbin.

Did you know?

Paper accounts for
28% of landfill waste

The bigger question is: What is the reason behind this havoc?

The reasons are many but the most important one is lack of recycling practice. Much of the paper waste in the city comes from offices and households. We are piling paper with other waste materials on a daily basis. This makes segregation of paper waste more difficult and it decomposes with other wastes. However, all we need to do is find a solution.

Did you know? India is even importing waste paper!

We recycle a total of 14 million tonnes of waste paper in India. Whereas we only contribute 30% i.e 4.2 million tonnes of paper waste. Remaining 10 million comes from foreign lands. Surprisingly, we imported 2,89,000 tonnes of paper waste from China in 2019 alone. This now makes our team at UrbansFarm wonder, Why is it even happening?

  • India is forced to import millions of tonnes of waste paper from other countries due to lack of indigenous segregation and collection mechanism of waste paper
  • We import around 10 million tonnes of waste paper every year. Wherein we throw million of tonnes of used paper into garbage every day

This huge Economic Burden can be minimized by adopting proper segregation and recycling of paper waste within the country. This will help us reduce the dependencies on other countries for import of waste paper.

According to reports, the cost of disposing of paper is many times more than recycling it.

Let’s make “Recycling”  a way of life.
